NISHIO-OWAGI WOMAN AND PINE is my contemporary interpretation of a collage of paintings by Japanese artist, Noguchi Shohin.
Shōhin was born in Osaka, Japan in 1847. She became a leading Japanese painter from the Edo (1603–1867) and Meiji (1868–1912) eras. Noguchi concentrated on the Southern Song formula of painting the forms, creating a zigzag “path” for the eye to follow, so the viewer can enjoy the experience of mentally walking through the landscape. She is best known for her: bijin-ga (paintings of beautiful women), Eastern-style landscapes and bird-and-flower paintings.
Shohin became a very distinguished artist with many commissions from the royal family, and even taught art to its female members. She became extremely famous when Her work was selected by the Japanese government to be shown at the World Columbian Exhibition in Chicago in 1893 as an example of the finest art of Japan. In 1904, she became the first woman to receive the title of “Imperial Court Artist” (Teishitsu-gigeiin).
